In the midst of enduring internal conflicts, ongoing armed clashes, the pandemic’s aftermath, and the upheaval caused by political crisis, the impact on the mental well-being of both children and vulnerable adults has been profound. In these trying times, the need for Mental Health Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) has never been more critical.

The Diocesan Commission for Education (DCE) has been unwaveringly dedicated to addressing these challenges by spearheading a comprehensive Psychosocial Support Project. The focus goes beyond mere assistance; it’s about empowering individuals directly and indirectly affected by these crises.

The cornerstone of this initiative revolves around cultivating five core Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) competencies. These competencies include brain-building, emotion regulation, positive social skills, conflict resolution, and perseverance. To achieve this, DCE has embraced the International Rescue Committee’s (IRC) curriculum, a proven framework for nurturing emotional intelligence.

Integral to the success of this project is the technical guidance and partnership with our partner organizations. Their expertise bolsters the project’s effectiveness, ensuring that the support provided is impactful and sustainable.

The results of these Psychosocial Support activities have been heartening. Children who have participated in the program exhibit increased motivation in their educational pursuits. Moreover, they are discovering the power of relaxation and social interaction during these sessions and weekends. This transformation owes much to the dedication of community-based volunteers who facilitate these activities.

The essence of continuity is woven into the project’s fabric. Regular mentoring and coaching sessions, led by DCE-Banmaw, ensure that the benefits of Psychosocial Support permeate the daily lives of these children. This holistic approach not only contributes to their academic journey but also nurtures their emotional resilience.

In essence, DCE’s Psychosocial Support Project stands as a beacon of hope and healing in the face of adversity. By equipping children with essential emotional tools and fostering a nurturing environment, the project creates ripples of positive change that extend far beyond the classroom.
